Practically every town has a rescue for dogs and cats, but Michigan has an estimated 10 legitimate bird rescues that try and handle the care and needs for thousands of birds across the state. Please consider a donation or volunteering to help organizations like ours fight to find caring homes for so many abandoned birds across the state.

Rescue & Re-Home since 2000

It's what we do.

Gideon is a Quaker parrot that is found across South America primarily and is now becoming more common right here in the U.S. with a newly discovered wild flock in Chicago, IL. Gideon was brought to our rescue in early 2006. We rescued him from a fellow rescue in Lansing, Michigan. He is the main reason this bird rescue was started.

THE BIRD RESCUE HAS CLOSED PERMANENTLY.

Gideon was hatched with a deformity. His left leg grew inside the egg up over his head. This made it so Gideon could not move around at all unless he skidded on his side. He couldn't perch, swing, play or hardly eat and drink. After Gideon was only a few months old, his owners tried to drown him in the toilet because they were either unwilling or unable to deal with his special needs, they were reported to authorites by their daughter. Before we received Gideon he had been under the care of our friend Judy in Lansing, where he underwent months of physical therapy to get his leg from sticking out over his head to now usable down near his other leg.

Gideon still has trouble getting around, but he tries his hardest. You will never meet another bird more happy to be alive. He sits and laughs, non-stop. From little giggles to great big laughs all with a little head bobbin for effect. He is never in a bad mood and his deformity has never slowed him down. He plays in the water, eats his fruits and veggies and loves to talk (although he isn't saying anything) with other birds, even the finches outside his window. He is a pure joy to have around and he can make friends with anyone, bird or not.

Gideon is proof that just because a bird may be born with a deformity or may have issues doesn't mean they are worthless. Most of the time it is those who need help the most, which bring the most joy into our lives. We are blessed to have a bird such as Gideon here at the rescue. He is the reason we do what we do. He is the reason we will always be here for our feathered friends!

Fact...

We work with local and state agencies, other rescues and zoos/sanctuaries on a regular basis to find homes for birds all over Michigan and sometimes beyond.

We run 100% on your donations of time and money. We don't receive grant money, we don't get any money from the city, county or state; nothing. Without your help to feed and take care of these birds, we won't be able to help find these unwanted birds new, loving homes. Please consider.

Volunteers Needed...

We are always in need of volunteers at the resuce. If we didn't have volunteers, we couldn't do what we do. If you are interested in being a foster parent for a bird, taking care of him or her at your home until a final home can be found, please contact us. We can also use some help on-site cleaning, feeding, watering and excersizing the birds.

We also rescue other types of farm anaimals, with the exclusion of reptiles and rodents, dogs & cats.

If you or anyone you know is interested in helping, please contact us. Any help, big or small, is still great help to us!

Make a donation...

Can't physically help? A finacial doantion, even if just a few dollars can help us protect these birds and find them new homes. Dog and cats have many different agencies working for their saftey, but birds are left out in almost every case. We are one of only a few birds rescues in the State of Michigan.

This means the number of calls we get is always high and our budget is always stressed. Luckily they stopped selling dogs and cats at pet stores as a general practice, however they still sell birds and many times people don't know how to care for them. That's why so many birds end of needing a new home.

Did you find a lost baby or hurt bird outside?

Often we get phone calls or e-mail from someone who has found a hurt bird or baby that has been kicked out of the nest. Beaks and Bills Bird Rescue is unable to take these birds because they are State and Federally regulated bird species and are protected. We do not have the specific permit to care for these birds. The best place to go to find a home for them or someone to help them mend is by visiting the DNR website of Michigan Licensed Rehabilitators.
